    Why offices suck

Office sucks. Let me list a few things: - Hot desks - People laughing and constantly talking while you are trying to focus - Unstable temperature making you freeze or boil - Uncomfortable and unhealthy desks/chairs - Often lack of proper screens/equipment - Getting squeezed in trains to commute - spending at best an extra hour per day - Unhealthy and expensive dietary options around work - Contamination of diseases - Useless meetings and team activities that usually produce zero value Not to mention how bad this is for the environment. And no, a ping-pong or foosball table doesn't make the office cool. It's like adding chocolate syrup on a rotten fruit to make it edible.

This is the biggest misconception about remote work

Remote work isn't work from home

Home isn't best place to work for most/many

Find a coworking or private office

Being in control of the temperature where you work is critical. When you’re cold you can at least wear more layers, but you don’t have any options when it’s too warm.

  • What the heck is asynchronous communication anyway?

Simply put, asynchronous communication is when you send a message without expecting an immediate response. For example, you send an email. I open and respond to the email several hours later.

The 40 hour workweek was established over a century ago.

Since then, we've invented 5G networks, automation, 3D printing, AR/VR, and a computer that can fit in your pocket.

Nearly all of the tools have changed, yet somehow ppl still think the way we work needs to stay the same.

Remote work empowers those who produce and disempowers those who have succeeded by being excellent diplomats and poor workers, along with those who have succeeded by always finding someone to blame for their failures. It removes the ability to seem productive.

  • The next frontier after remote work is async

It's been almost a decade now that we've all been promoting the benefits of remote work and location independent living.

With the pandemic suddenly shooting remote work into the mainstream](https://levels.io/the-greatest-migration/), it seems like people are finally starting to believe the merits of remote work. Most people don't want to go back to the office and I strongly believe most people won't go back to the office after the pandemic ends.

  • The future of remote work: how the greatest human migration in history will happen in the next ten years

Here's my thesis on the next decade of remote work and how it'll transform society. I think we're on the verge of the greatest migration in human history. It won't be nomads traveling around the world perpetually, but it will be millions of people relocating semi-permanently to places better fit for their way of living. In this thesis I'll argue why this will happen, how it might happen and how we can benefit from this movement.

  • Your daily standups should be async Here's why

Many teams start their day with the infamous three questions of the daily stand-up: "what did you do yesterday?", "what are you going to do today?", and "what are you blocked by?".

  • Distributed Work’s Five Levels of Autonomy

I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Sam Harris, author and host of the Making Sense podcast, for a wide-ranging conversation. Given the moment we’re currently living through, we naturally touched on the way companies are adapting to a new reality — one where remote work is a model to which they must adapt in a matter of days, rather than years.

Good communication in a remote team:

    • Write status updates
    • Communicate the obvious
    • Format your writing effectively
    • Confirm decisions to move them forward
    • Offer conclusions in long discussions
    • Make decisions transparent
    • Take initiatives and deliver on your promises

  • How to Work Remotely Without Going Insane

The future of work is remote.

In recent years, fully-remote companies like GitLab, Zapier, and InVision have proven that a remote culture is not just a perk, but a clear business advantage. Technology is accelerating this transition. We can chat instantaneously in Slack, coordinate a global videoconference through Zoom, and track our entire roadmap in Asana.

Remote workers, there are more inspiring places to work than coffee shops.

    • Hotel lobbies
    • Hotel poolside (often buying coffee is enough)
    • Food truck parks
    • Parks with benches
    • Museums
    • Ultra-luxury gyms
    • etc

The future of remote work is trusting people, empowering people and focusing only on outputs.

Yet people think it’s about technology or Slack or some nonsense coworking space.

Digital transformation is 99% about people and culture

There’s a great deal of discussion as of late about “remote” being the future of work.

Remote is the future of everything.

Education. Fitness. Experiences. Medicine. Relationships. Community.

The technology is finally cohesive enough—VR will simply accelerate this trend.

    Dear tech companies,

Employees don't need ping pong tables or beer fridges at work. 🙅‍♂️🙅‍♀️

Employees need flexibility to do their best work and enjoy life. For instance, working remotely. 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♀️

Please offer trust, not toys. 🙌

In the future "remote companies" will just be called "companies". I honestly don't get how spending 1hr+ per day commuting to an office for a 9-5 can be the way 21st century humans are supposed to work.

The notion that sitting in traffic each morning to reach a room where one stares into a screen for 9 hours - every day, for 40 odd years - is desirable is the greatest con capitalism has ever pulled.
